Top Bar Style

Flat top bars have a groove cut in the bottom as a straight guide for mounting foundation or a starter strip of wax, plastic or wood.
Tapered top bars are “V” shaped, providing a guide for straight comb building without foundation or a starter strip.

Frame Wiring Style

Straight wire frames have 4 vertical wires in the frame.  These provide better structure and support for the comb for using a rotary extractor and can be used to mount wax foundation in the frame.
Cross-wire (X-Wire) frames have 4 wires which run at angles from top to bottom and cross at 3 points.  This is done to provide better vertical support for comb and reduce the incidence of comb collapse.

Frame Width

1-1/2″ is the typical width for Layens frames. 1-3/8″ may better match the bees’ natural comb spacing.

Lemongrass Oil Swarm Lure Kit

Lemongrass oil (10 ml) and (12) slow-release tubes for baiting swarm traps to catch honeybee swarms.

Old Brood Comb for Swarm Bait

Including old brood comb in your bait hive is extremely beneficial for attracting scout bees as it imparts multiple smells unique to a beehive, making your swarm trap seem like a former hive location. This communicates to the bees that it may be favorable for their new home. This brood comb, taken from my own hives, can provide a source for the beehive smells with which the bees are familiar.

I recently purchased 5 of these swarm traps. Wow, well done! Monte’s attention to detail (the hive, frames, swag, packaging and ordering process) is commendable. These are a great value! Factor in your time and materials and these become a no-brainier. BTW, my woodworker neighbour who built several of Dr. Leo’s 7 frame swarm traps for me agrees! Highly recommended!

These are a very common sense approach to a swarm hive. Their weight is ideal for this use and the use of the french cleats adds to the practicality of the application. I love the use of the X wires and his attention to detail is most superb. It was so well packaged that nothing disturbs the product in shipping. He had even prepared the of the box. All one need is a little lemongrass oil and propolis and the bees will be very please when they come across this one. He’s amazing!

I’m impressed with how well made these swarm traps are!! Great attention to detail is appreciated! I’m looking forward to getting them hung and catching some swarms!!

I was blown away at the high quality of this layens swarm trap. The price point is too good to pass up.

Thanks, Bruce! I value your opinion and I know you can be trusted to give honest feedback. Yours was one of the first traps I shipped, and since then I’ve been consistently working to improve the consistency, fit and finish of the trap builds. I hope that new buyers will be even more happy with the quality of the build and practicality of the hanger, that their trap lasts a long time, and most importantly that they catch bees.
