Description
13″ x 16″ Frame for a Layens beehive. Frames have 14-5/16″L x 1-1/2″W top bars which touch along the length of the frame, forming an enclosed space within the hive. Vertical side bars are tapered for contact at the top with a gap along the lower portion. Frames are completely assembled and wired.
Straight wire frames have 4 vertical wires in the frame. These provide better structure and support for the comb for using a rotary extractor and can be used to mount wax foundation in the frame.
Cross-wire (X-Wire) frames have 4 wires which run at angles from top to bottom and cross at 3 points. This is done to provide better support for comb and reduce the incidence of comb collapse. A spur wire embedder is recommended (vs. using an electric current) for installing wax foundation. These tools are available here: https://suburbansodbuster.com/product/wax-foundation-wire-embedder-tool/
These frames are made with a 3/32″ groove in the top bar to help align wax foundation or into which wood starter strip can be glued. A wood starter strip, if used, should be coated with wax to improve honeybee acceptance and promote comb building.
