What’s a Swarm?

Swarming is a honeybee colony’s natural method for reproducing by propogating new colonies. A colony which outgrows its space will make new queens and, just before these queens emerge from their cells, the existing queen and about half the workers will leave the hive to find a new home. Eventually this swarm might move into a hollow tree, building wall or some other cavity, but until they find a suitable home you might see them hanging in a cluster from a fence, tree, or some other structure. Contrary to what is seen in cartons, a honeybee swarm is not an angry group of bees looking for a target to attack. Rather, they are just a homeless colony of bees looking for a place to make their hive.
